Project Overview

 Clothed Minds is an award-winning documentary focusing on the effects that school dress code policies have on Black girls in the Washington DC public and charter school systems. Based on the report “Dress Coded: Black girls, bodies and bias in DC Schools” from the National Women’s Law Center, this documentary seeks to explore the impacts that strictly enforcing dress codes on Black girls over other races and genders. The harsh punishments were proven to lead to detrimental effects on the girls’ school performance, self-esteem and even the ability to find and maintain work as adults.  

Director/Producer: Carletta S. Hurt

 Director/Producer, Carletta S. Hurt, is a longtime filmmaker and educator with an extensive background in the DC public and charter school system. Her work can be seen on BET+. ALLBLK, and ASPIRE TV. She is moved by projects that provide the audience with a chance to grow, learn, and ultimately ACT! 

Director of Photography: Anne Saul

 Anne  Saul is a DP and Gaffer, Educator, Musician, Performance Driver, & Mom from Annapolis Md. She has been working in film for the past 12  years and has had the pleasure to work with many outstanding crews and teams including IKAM Productions, Women in Film and Video DC, GMUTV,  Smithsonian Folkways, and Stone Soup.  

Editor/Producer: Lauren Evangelista

Lauren has nearly a decade of experience as a post supervisor and post producer for episodic documentary television. Her work has aired on HBO and Viceland, covering a range of topics from international political and environmental conflicts to LGBTQ rights and criminal justice in the U.S. She most recently completed work on her first two feature docs, editing Fierce Funny & Fly, and associate producing Storm Lake 

Post Production Producer: Stephanie Powers

 Stephanie has worked in television & film since 2009 with clients like Discovery, National Geographic, and Children’s National Hospital on projects such as Puppy Bowl, Shark Week, Shark Fest, and fundraising events. Many of her projects have focused on nature and animal welfare, but she hopes to continue to do more in the indie film realm to raise up voices that need to be heard.
